Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has moved the Calcutta High Court with a fresh petition after reporting another egg-pelting incident during a visit to her constituency in Nadia district. The matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya on September 21, 2026.

The fresh petition comes less than three weeks after the High Court directed the police to provide security to Moitra during her visits to her Krishnanagar constituency following complaints of egg pelting and other forms of harassment. Bar & Bench reported that the latest incident occurred on September 16.

What happened to Mahua Moitra?

According to reports, Moitra faced an egg-pelting incident on September 16 while travelling to attend a TMC meeting in Tahatta, Nadia.

Moitra alleged that BJP workers and leaders had gathered outside the venue and threw eggs at her as she was leaving. The allegations have been reported by multiple news organisations. The BJP has also publicly commented on the incident, with a party spokesperson condemning the targeting of a woman politician.

Moitra has also alleged that police personnel present at the location did not prevent the incident. The police's account, as reported by Indian Express Bangla, was that officers knew of her presence but did not have information about the precise location of the meeting.

Why did Mahua Moitra approach the Calcutta High Court?

Moitra's latest petition follows an earlier order passed by the Calcutta High Court on September 1.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharya had directed the Krishnanagar Police District to deploy two police personnel to protect Moitra from egg pelting and similar forms of harassment whenever she entered her constituency.

The arrangement was ordered for 30 days, subject to Moitra providing the Superintendent of Police with 48 hours' advance notice of her visit. The court also directed the State to take steps to prevent such incidents. :contentReference

What happened during the September 21 court hearing?

Moitra's lawyer, advocate Arka Kumar Nag, told the court that despite the September 1 protection order, she faced another egg-pelting incident on September 16.

Justice Bhattacharya questioned what further relief was being sought in light of the earlier order. Moitra's counsel explained that a fresh petition had been filed following the latest incident.

The lawyer also told the court that the matter had been mentioned before a Bench led by the Chief Justice on September 16, seeking an urgent listing.

Justice Bhattacharya declined to give the fresh petition an urgent listing, saying that the writ petition should come up according to the normal presentation process and that preference could not be given.

According to the case-status information cited by Bar & Bench, the matter was tentatively listed for September 22.

What did the Calcutta High Court order on September 1?

On September 1, the Calcutta High Court directed that two police personnel be deployed whenever Moitra visited her constituency to prevent egg pelting and other alleged harassment.

The court directed Moitra to give the Krishnanagar Superintendent of Police 48 hours' advance notice before entering the constituency so that the required police protection could be arranged.

Justice Bhattacharya also told the State to deal firmly with incidents of egg pelting, warning that such incidents could become difficult to control if they continued.

What has Mahua Moitra alleged?

Moitra has repeatedly alleged that political workers have targeted her and other political leaders with eggs, tomatoes, potatoes and stones during constituency visits.

Her legal team has argued that such incidents interfere with her ability to perform her responsibilities as an elected representative.

During the September 1 proceedings, her counsel told the court that the alleged incidents had affected Moitra's ability to visit her constituency and attend proceedings connected with cases involving her.

What did the State tell the High Court?

During the earlier proceedings, West Bengal's Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Mazumdar told the court that the State already had a standard operating protocol for dealing with incidents of egg pelting.

He also informed the court that a first information report had been registered on July 3 following complaints made by Moitra about an earlier incident.

The State's submissions formed part of the proceedings that resulted in the September 1 order providing additional police protection to Moitra during constituency visits.

Supreme Court's earlier observation about egg pelting

The latest High Court proceedings also follow an earlier Supreme Court hearing involving Moitra.

In August, the Supreme Court declined to entertain Moitra's request for permission to appear virtually before police in a separate case. During those proceedings, the court made an oral observation referring to her concerns about egg attacks and her status as a politician.

The Supreme Court's observation was subsequently referred to by Moitra after the September 16 incident. In a social media video, she said she had faced the egg attack while accompanied by police personnel and referred to the earlier Supreme Court remark.

What did Moitra say after the September 16 incident?

Following the incident, Moitra said in a social media video that BJP workers and leaders had gathered outside a TMC meeting in Tahatta and thrown eggs at her.

She also questioned why she should leave the location when police personnel were present and said she was not afraid of the incident. These statements were reported by Indian Express and other media outlets.

What happens next?

The fresh petition is expected to come before the Calcutta High Court according to its normal listing process. Bar & Bench reported that the matter was tentatively listed for September 22, 2026.

The proceedings will determine what further directions, if any, are sought in relation to the alleged September 16 incident and the earlier security arrangement ordered by the court.
